Title Online or Not Online? A Comparison of Offline and Online Surveys Conducted in the Context of 2002 German Federal Election

Abstract

The article compares the results of three surveys that were conducted in methodologically very different ways in the run-up to the last German federal election. The first survey is a representative sample of the German population, the second one is a representative web survey of internet users, the third one is an unsolicited web survey with self-selected participants. The comparison yields considerable differ-ences among the three surveys concerning demographic (age, sex, education) as well as substantial variables (voting behaviour, interest in politics). It is also shown that these differences remain after weighting the samples by sex and age.
